Violent Crime Stats Trending in the Wrong Direction across the US
Government officials are growing increasingly worried about the rise in violent crimes across the United States, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Violent crimes such as murder, sexual assault/rape and robbery continue to be a serious problem in a lot of major US cities, with local law enforcement and federal authorities struggling to come up with an effective plan for stemming the tide and stopping the rise in assault offenses and homicides.
James Comey, the director of the FBI, recently commented on the latest violent crime statistics released by the federal government and questioned whether the report of a rise in crime across the U.S is “getting the attention at the national level it deserves.”
One of the biggest issues in trying to combat violent crime is that even the country’s foremost law enforcement officials and experts aren’t sure about what to do. FBI Director Comey went so far as directly state that he simply does not know what the answer might be.
Although violent crime rates haven’t reached the peak levels of the early 1990s, they still remain high. Moreover, violent crime rates have been on the rise in recent years, especially in large cities like NYC, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Shooting deaths in Chicago have gotten a great deal of media attention in the past few months, as there seems to be another fatal shooting every day in the poorest parts of the city. For example, there were six homicides in Chicago during Memorial Day weekend.
The reality is that poor neighborhoods throughout the United States are plagued by murder, assaults and other violent criminal offenses. Whether it’s Chicago, New York City or Newark NJ, many residents are scared to walk outside their homes at night for fear of being gunned down.
Interestingly, some U.S. cities, like Miami and Oakland, have seen homicides and other violent crimes decline in the last few years. The key for government leaders in these towns, and elsewhere, is to determine what law enforcement strategies are most effective at shutting down violent crime before it happens.
