Air Bag Defect Prompts Fiat Chrysler to Recall 200K Jeep Wrangler SUVs
Fiat Chrysler recently issued yet another automotive recall in connection with defective airbags.
The major auto manufacturer is recalling more than 200,000 vehicles from the U.S. and foreign countries due to the fact that the vehicle air bags don’t always inflate upon impact in a car accident. The vehicles affected by the recall are 2016 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and 2017 Jeep Wrangler SUVs, but none of the affected 2017 vehicles have been sold in the U.S. yet.
Fiat Chrysler learned about the possible auto defect while conducting crash tests on the motor vehicles. During the crash tests, the Jeep Wrangler air bags occasionally failed to deploy. A closer look at the vehicle led to the discovery that the air bag wiring can come loose when the left headlight rotates. The wiring goes directly to a sensor that provides a prompt to the air bag computer. Without the necessary prompt, the air bag won’t deploy during a collision.
At this time, there have not been any reports of drivers or passengers in Jeep Wrangler SUVs suffering injuries as a result of this specific air bag defect. Moreover, documents submitted by Fiat Chrysler to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that the auto company has not received any complaints from customers. However, Fiat Chrysler is understandably exercising a great deal of caution in issuing the recall, especially in light of the disastrous Takata air bag recall that has affected millions of vehicles on US roadways.
Although the necessary repairs can’t be made yet, Fiat Chrysler announced that the repairs should be ready soon. Anyone reporting that they own one of the recalled SUVs will be contacted by their local dealer in order to arrange an appointment so that the defective wiring in the vehicle air bag can be rerouted and fixed.
