Up to 40 People Injured in New York Train Accident
Approximately 600 people were put at risk of serious injury when two Long Island trains crashed into each other. According to authorities, several dozen people actually sustained injuries in the NY train accident.
A commuter train left NY Penn Station at 8:22 p.m. and was traveling eastbound on the Long Island Rail Road when it approached New Hyde Park around 9:00 p.m. That’s when the train suddenly made contact with a work train traveling on the same track, with the front car of the commuter train sideswiping the work train The contact caused the second and third cars on the commuter train to derail, throwing people around inside the train cars.
The accident occurred east of New York City and resulted in significant injuries to as many as 40 people. According to a spokesperson for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, 11 passengers required hospitalization. Thankfully, though, none of the injuries were believed to be life threatening. A Nassau County official confirmed that the injuries mostly ranged from broken bones to lacerations.
Most of the injured passengers were occupants of the first three cars on the commuter train.
Although the New York train accident is generating many news headlines because there were no fatalities, it is drawing the attention of some people because of its similarities to the recent train accident in Hoboken, New Jersey. In that train crash, a train approached Hoboken Terminal and an extremely high rate of speed and completely derailed upon impact.
One thing that safety officials will surely be looking at when it comes to the NY train accident is whether the train’s engineer failed to slow down in advance of colliding with the work train.
