Gun Control Research Shows That Other Countries Have Successfully Reduced Gun-Related Deaths
A new study on international gun control laws suggests that stricter legislation in the U.S. could have a positive effect on gun violence.
Gun Violence on the Rise in the United States
A spate of mass shootings in the U.S. in recent years has led to calls for tighter gun control. In 2015, there were 355 mass shootings in the United States. Moreover, Americans own more guns per capita than residents of any other country, according to data compiled by the Small Arms Survey.
A number of prominent politicians and political leaders are now pushing for legislation that would make it harder for people to purchase firearms without a valid gun license. Earlier this year, President Obama announced that he wanted the “gun show” loophole, which allows some private sellers of firearms to avoid running a background check on purchasers, to be closed for good.
International Study: Gun Control Works in Other Countries
The Epidemiological Reviews, a review journal that focuses on public health, recently published the results of a meta-study looking at gun-related deaths in several countries around the world. The study found that gun control laws in these countries have worked when it comes to reducing the number of shootings and gun deaths.
The study considered gun control reforms that included outright bans on firearm sales, as well as less stringent restrictions like background checks and requirements for gun permits and ownership licenses. The authors of the study ultimately concluded that countries implementing laws that target different aspects of gun violence and that include multiple restrictions on firearms have the best chance of success.
