Newtown, CT Marks Third Anniversary of School Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary

As President Barack Obama pushes for more stringent federal gun control laws, Connecticut recently marked the third anniversary of the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

For many, it was the Newtown, CT tragedy that spurred calls for gun control legislation at both the state and federal levels. On the fateful day of Dec. 14, 2012, Adam Lanza went on a rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, a quiet community located roughly 60 miles from New York City. The 20-year-old Lanza was heavily armed when he shot his way inside the school building and then proceeded to murder a number of teachers and children. Among those killed inside the school were six teachers and 20 students. It was the deadliest mass shooting to occur at a grade school or high school in the long history of this country. Authorities later learned that Lanza also murdered his mother inside their Newtown, CT home and spoke with his brother, who resides in Hoboken, New Jersey, before going to Sandy Hook Elementary.

The mass shooting garnered an incredible amount of media coverage and generated a fierce debate among politicians, media members and citizens about the effectiveness of gun crime laws in the United States. While that debate continues to rage on, Newtown quietly acknowledged the third anniversary of the tragic school shooting. Across Connecticut, state and local government buildings flew flags at half-staff, while churches offered spaces for residents to come together and remember those who died.

Although it has been three years since the Newtown tragedy, gun crime remains a serious problem throughout the U.S. The calls for more stringent laws on handguns and other weapons have only gotten louder as Congress has proven largely incapable of passing meaningful gun control legislation. This is true even in New York, where lawmakers already impose some of the toughest weapons offense penalties in the entire country.
